Audi S3 gets a booty

11.04.2014

THE latest onslaught of performance models by Audi has left South African petrol heads spoilt for choice. But probably one of the most highly anticipated vehicles is the S3 sedan.

Joining its other S3 siblings (S3 hatch and S3 sportback), the S3 sedan utilises the same 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine with a punchy 206kW and 380Nm of torque. The result is a 0-100km/h speed of five seconds dead and will continue galloping to a governed top speed of 250km/h.

The S3 Sedan will only be available with a six-speed S tronic transmission, which will transfer the power to all four wheels. The heart of the quattro drive system is an electronically controlled and hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch. During normal driving, the clutch sends most of the engine’s power to the front wheels. If traction decreases, the clutch can transfer torque seamlessly to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds.

In addition, the TFSI powertrain housed beneath this sedan’s bonnet employs the latest efficiency technologies to return fuel consumption figures of 7.0 litres/100km in the combined cycle with a corresponding CO2 emissions figure of 162g/km.
Having driven various versions of the S3, we cannot wait to get our hands on the S3 sedan as it will no doubt deliver the same inspiring and interactive drive as its fellow brethren. Fitted with the standard Audi drive select system to boost driving feel through stiffening steering response and shift points, the driver can determine the characteristics with the push of a button whether these systems operate in comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency or individual mode.

In the looks department, the new S3 shares many of the same styling traits with its aggressive stance and athletic sculpture highlighted by the tornado line below the windows and the sharply sloped C-pillars stretch the body visually. Adding to the sporty appeal is a set of 18-inch five-parallel-spoke design cast aluminium alloy wheels.

The Audi S3 sedan sports the S-specific single-frame grille captured in an aluminium-look finish and the insert is matt platinum grey. The newly designed bumper features aluminium-look double ribs integrated into the lateral air inlets. Pronounced edges frame the large air inlets with the high gloss black honeycomb inserts.

When viewed from the side, the aluminium-look exterior mirrors and the pronounced side sills are immediately noticeable. The rear bumper has also been redesigned with the platinum grey diffuser housing the exhaust system’s four oval tailpipes, which sport chrome tips.

The athletic design of the exterior carries over into the interior. A distinct arch encircles the instrument panel which appears to float on the centre console. Large, round air vents, the elegant control panel for the air conditioning and the decorative inlays in matt brushed aluminium or a black 3D look, provide exquisite accents, while the boot boasts 390 litres of luggage capacity.

A few of the standard features include: cruise control, Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, while the flat rear lights, into which the adaptive brake light is integrated, are also fitted with light-emitting diodes.

Having been launched in standard attire in January this year, the A3 sedan has enjoyed some 680 deliveries to SA consumers. The new addition of the Audi S3 sedan to the current range allows the brand to extend its offering in the highly competitive A-segment of the market. It will further enhance this offering with the launch of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet later this month, followed by the S3 Cabriolet later in the year.

The new Audi S3 sedan is now available in South Africa at the following pricing, inclusive of all taxes and the standard five-year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan, available to extend to seven years/200 000km.
