Daihatsu’s pick-up, a worker to the max

WHEN it comes to an econo worker, the Daihatsu Gran Max stands out. Originally launched in 2010, this workhorse recently received a few nips and tucks to update the vehicle.

From a design perspective, it still looks like a box with its square design. But just like a box, the Gran Max offers loads of space to help small business owners go about their daily tasks.

Equipped with a load bed that’s 2.4m long and 1.6m wide, this little worker offers the full benefit of a one-ton pick-up.

Add to the mix its fitted drop sides, which aid with loading any materials, and you begin to understand just how user-friendly the Gran Max is.

It’s never going to win any awards for innovation, but the simplistic nature of the vehicle is what makes it so functional for everyday use.

The cabin fits three occupants, admittedly with a squeeze, but Daihatsu has focused on safety and practicality, equipping the pick-up with ABS and crumple zones in the front, dual side impact bars in the doors and a collapsible steering column for frontal impacts. A high-spec version adds dual front airbags to the safety equipment list, together with standard air conditioning.

Powering the Gran Max is a 1.5-litre engine and while it may feel bogged down at altitude with a heavier load, the 71kW and 134Nm of torque are more than enough to get it moving between points A and B.

More impressive though is the Gran Max’s fuel consumption and operating costs, which Daihatsu has tried to keep as low as possible to benefit the customer. Averaging around 7.5 litres/100km, the Gran Max is certainly a value-driven proposition for those looking to lower their operating costs.

The Daihatsu Gran Max is offered in standard and high-spec versions, with retail pricing of R139 995 and R149 995 respectively. The price includes a 1-year/unlimited distance warranty.
