Eight-model Fiat Tipo range priced

A moniker last used on its small family hatch in Europe between 1988 and 1995, Fiat Chrysler South Africa has revealed pricing details of its new Tipo set or local introduction later this month.

On sale in Europe since 2015 as a replacement for the aged Bravo and slow selling Linea sedan, the Turkish made Tipo uses a variation of Fiat's SCCS platform known as Small Wide LWB, which also underpins the 500L and South American Toro pick-up, and will be offered as either a hatchback or sedan with an initial line-up spanning eight models.

Starting the range off, the base Pop makes use of a 1.4-litre petrol engine making 70 kW and 127 Nm of torque, with a six-speed manual being the only transmission offered. Available in both bodystyles, Fiat claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.7 L/100 km and emissions of 141 g/km for the sedan and 132 g/km for the hatch. Top speed is a claimed 185 km/h for both with the 0-100 km/h dash taking 11.5 seconds.

In terms of standard spec, the Pop gets a six-speaker sound system with Bluetooth and USB, cloth seats, body colour door handles, heated electric mirrors, auto lock doors, electric windows, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP, Tyre Pressure monitor and Hill Hold Assist. Cruise control and rear parking sensors are meanwhile optional on the hatch only.

Moving one up, the Easy mirrors the Pop in terms of petrol engines, but adds the option of a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel in sedan configuration only with outputs of 70 kW and 200 Nm. Linked to a five-speed manual gearbox, fuel consumption is rated at 3.7 L/100 km and emissions below the tax threshold at 117 g/km. Fiat claims a top speed of 183 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint of 11.8 seconds.

Standard equipment builds on that of the Pop and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, leather trimmed steering wheel, cruise control, automatic air-conditioning and rear parking sensors with a reverse camera and satellite navigation optional.

Sitting above the Easy and available as a hatchback only, the Lounge features the same petrol drivetrain, but benefits from 17-inch alloy wheels, a five-inch UConnect infotainment system with voice recognition and embedded TomTom satellite navigation, reverse camera and techno-leather seats.

Capping the range off but in Easy trim only and thus missing out on some of the Lounge's luxuries, the 1.6-litre petrol develops 81 kW and 152 Nm of torque, with a six-speed automatic being the sole transmission option. Top speed is rated at 192 km/h and the 0-100 km/h sprint in 11.2 seconds, with fuel consumption and emissions at 6.3 L/100 km and 146 g/km respectively.

A three year / 100 000 km warranty and service plan are standard across the range.
