25.04.2019

Opel South Africa distributor, Unitrans Motors, has quietly revealed pricing details for the new Combo Cargo van that will spearhead the French-owned German automaker’s commercial division.

Initially to be offered as a panel van only, Opel’s take on the Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner that walked away with the 2019 International Van of the Year Award last year will be offered in two body configurations, standard and long wheelbase (LWB), with the former measuring 4 403 mm in overall length, and the latter 4 753 mm. Maximum load length is rated at 3 090 mm for the standard that also measures 1 796 mm in height, while the LWB comes in at 3 440 mm and 1 880 mm respectively.

In terms of cargo space, the standard can swallow up to 3.8 m3 with a rated payload of 955 kg, while the LWB, which comes with dual sliding side doors, can take 4.4 m3 of cargo, though the payload is higher at 1020 kg. Towing capacity is rated at 1 250 kg for a braked trailer.

On the spec-front, the Combo comes with items such as a four-speaker Bluetooth enabled sound system with USB input, central steel bulkhead, rear interior electric door lock, electric windows, speed-sensitive power steering, central locking, dual front airbags, ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist and Emergency Brake Assist

Unlike in Europe, local Combo models will come powered by a single engine, a 1.6-litre CDTI that has been re-tuned to produce 68 kW and 230 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox sends the amount of twist to the front wheels with Opel claiming a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.0 L/100 km.

Aimed at the likes of the Ford Transit Connect and Volkswagen Caddy, the Combo comes as standard with a three year/120 000 km warranty and a three year/60 000 km service plan, with pricing from R311 700 for the standard and from R350 400 for the LWB.
