Volvo ups S90 aggressive factor with R-Design trim

01.08.2017

On the market since January, Volvo Cars South Africa has expanded its S90 range with the introduction of the aesthetically enhanced R-Design.

Slotting above the Momentum and Inscription as the new flagship trim level, the R-Design adds a gloss grille with satin chrome detailing, matt-silver mirror caps, satin chrome flanks, standard 19-inch alloy wheels with 20 or 21-inches optional, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, colour coded diffuser plate and rhomboid tailpipes. Additional accessories includes a model specific front bumper spoiler, side sills, boot spoiler and integrated exhaust pipes.

While standard and optional in-car as well as safety tech mirrors that of the S90 range, interior changes to the R-Design consist of charcoal sport fine Nappa leather seats with Nubuck centres, perforated leather sports steering wheels with R-Design badging, aluminium pedals and gear shift paddles, contrasting stitching on the gear lever, R-Design floor mats and illuminated R-Design door sills.

In-line with its newfound sporty demeanour, the R-Design also receives a fettled chassis employing a harder setup, Volvo claims has been "optimised for enhanced dynamics". Unlike the regular S90, the R-Design does without Air Suspension.

Up front, the R-Design's 2.0-litre Drive-E range of petrol and diesel engines remain unchanged with the T5 and all-wheel drive turbo/supercharged T6 producing 187 kW / 350 Nm and 235 kW / 400 Nm respectively, and the D4 and all-wheel drive twin-turbo D5 140 kW / 400 Nm and 173 kW / 480 Nm. As with the rest of the S90 range, only a eight-speed Geartronic transmission is offered.

A five year / 100 000 km maintenance plan and warranty are standard on all models.
