Diesel Citroën Aircross a sensible choice


WHEN you think of an SUV, you think of a plumped-up car on stilts. This is exactly what the Citroën C4 Aircross is - a fattened-up C4 and to be honest, it doesn’t look bad as a fatty at all.

That said, moving a vehicle of the larger variety means you’re going to need some muscle power. Citroën has now equipped its C4 Aircross with a 1.6-litre diesel engine. It’s great when it comes to fuel consumption, averaging a low 4.6 litres/100km. It’s a figure I can live with given the escalating fuel prices.

All the fuel-saving tit bits have also been added, including auto stop/start and a six-speed manual gearbox for highway cruising.

The only downside is that the 84kW of power and 270Nm of torque mean it takes some getting used to when pulling off, as the turbo lag can be annoying. However, once you find yourself in the sweet spot, the Aircross hums along nicely and sips fuel like a recovering alcoholic. The Co2 emissions of 119g/km also means you are exempt from paying emissions tax.

Ideally, the cabin is where you want to be. A plethora of standard features and a strong focus on safety offers the driver peace of mind.

Everything from seven airbags, Isofix attachment points for compatible child seats, anti-skid ABS brakes with EBD and emergency brake assist are standard. In terms of creature comforts, a chilled glovebox, USB port and auxiliary audio jack, voice-activated Bluetooth compatibility and cup holders are just a few of the niceties.

This Citroën may be related to the Peugeot 4008 and Mitsubishi ASX, but it’s definitely the best-looking cousin. And its frugal diesel powertrain makes it even that much more attractive plus its the only diesel derivative of the lot.
