Diesel Trailblazer the sensible choice


LAST YEAR, we tested Chev’s Fortuner competitor, the Trailblazer. A few months on, a quick glance at the sales figures and you realise there seems to be quite a few fans of Chevrolet’s new SUV. And so there should be.

Initially we tested the bigger mule in the Trailblazer family, the hefty 3.6-litre V6 petrol-guzzling machine. It was impressive. We were advised, however, to make sure we get our hands on the diesel derivative.

We finally managed to do that and after a long wait the 2.5-litre Duramax diesel-engined Trailblazer arrived. This more frugal and slightly more timid SUV produces 110kW of power and is equipped with a generous 350Nm of torque.

The claimed fuel consumption figure is a low 8.2 litres/100km. This means you can do some decent cruising off a tank of fuel. The healthy dose of low-down torque means, should you decide to do some towing or get adventurous and dusty, the power available will be able to help you, should you find yourself in a spot of bother.

The Trailblazer is largely fitted with all the bells and whistles we’ve come to expect from this class of SUV. There are small effects that do irk me - the mini USB is one of them - while the finish is not quite on par with the Fortuner just yet.

The other concern for the Trailblazer is that it’s going up against the segment leader, the Fortuner, but is priced above it. Weird, since we all know how much the South African public love their Toyotas. The only way to beat them, could be too out-price them.
