BMW M5 Sedan

Motoring Review

BMW's most powerful production car yet is ready to hit South African shores.  First born in 1984 and now re-invented and tweaked for the fifth time, the latest and all-new BMW M5 luxury sedan is poised to continue its dominance of the segment around the world by blending sports car performance, sedan utility and luxury ambiance.  Additionally, the all-new M5 features significant changes to it engine line-up befitting 'sign of the times' environmentally conscious minded would-be buyers – to a certain extent that is...

The new M5 is larger than its predecessor and remains true to traditional BMW styling on its exterior.  There is a host of M-specific design and aerodynamic details including the three air intakes at the front which help cool the twin-turbo engine.  Bi-xenon light clusters with LED accents come as standard.  Buy a car like this and you will get an exclusive M-specification bodykit including the new hallmark “gills” in the upper front fenders, add to this special 19 inch light alloys and a small Gurney-style rear spoiler at the back on the boot lid.

Inside the BMW M5 there is a mix of luxury sedan features and 'real-deal' sports cars specifications.  Full leather M Sport seats, metal interior trim strips and BMW's latest iDrive control system with a 10.2 inch display make for an exclusive interior while Classic M circular dials with red needles on white illumination on the instrument cluster allude to the car's sporty character and purpose.  There are multifunction buttons on the steering wheel which now include two M Drive buttons for two different car settings.  M5 drivers can personalize their vehicle by adjusting engine management settings, power steering (communicative hydraulic power steering rather than electric), the transmission gearshift programme, DSC mode and the M5's Dynamic Damper Control settings.

Gone is the thirsty V10 of the fourth-generation M5, in is a smaller, more efficient (and more powerful) 4.4-liter V8 with an M-developed TwinPower Turbo Package that features the M division's latest technology and turbocharging know-how.  Rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed M dual-clutch Drivelogic transmission comes as standard, while a six-speed manual is available. Unlike the high-strung engines that came before it, this turbocharged engine enjoys a mountain of low-end torque and doesn't let up as the revs build.  This is an astonishingly quick car.  The M5 drive is largely determined by a vast amount of drive settings that can be selected by the driver.  Steering weight, suspension firmness, throttle response, transmission shift programming and stability control can all be altered to the preference of the driver.  The new M5's increase in engine output makes for a 'supercar-like' 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.  Thanks to BMW’s standard Efficient Dynamics technology which incorporates auto start/stop and brake energy regeneration, fuel consumption has been reduced by more than 30%, (BMW claims), and CO2 emissions down to 232g/km.

In terms of safety the rear-wheel drive M5 uses track-bred chassis technology and a new Active M differential – an electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip differential – to keep the car facing the right way at all times.  As a further safety net the DSC system is coupled with ABS including brake control, dynamic brake control, brake assistant with brake drying function and brake fade compensation.  Additionally, there are front and side impact airbags, traction control, a tyre pressure monitor, park distance control for front and rear with graphic display and BMW Assist Safety Plan with Bluetooth wireless technology... the list goes on …

High performance, outstanding technology and the true sensation of motor sports driving sums up the latest BMW M5 Sedan.  Not for the faint-hearted, this fast paced muscle machine is a sporting enthusiasts dream come true.  In terms of pricing expect to shell out R 1 155 076 and upwards.  (Prices are subject to change according to various factors so please consult your dealer for the latest price.)
