Ford Fusion

Motoring Review

THE new Ford Fusion is a car that competes on a global scale. In Europe it’s known as the Mondeo and in America it’s known as a Fusion. This is all part of Ford’s One Ford philosophy. Instead of having two different cars for different markets they just have one, really good car.

From a design perspective, the Fusion looks the part. Embodying the modern Ford design approach, it looks aggressive up front with a sleek almost coupé-like side profile and strong rear end. We particularly like the front grille and yes it does look a lot like that of an Aston Martin. We also like its narrow headlights.

Inside, the futuristic cabin is clean and well designed with everything well laid out and easy to navigate. The space up front is driver-focused with sufficient rear occupant space easily capable of fitting three adults in a cocoon of ample luxury. The Ford’s SYNC system was a great feature when it was initially launched, now though, Ford has upgraded the system to a SYNC 2 connectivity system. It might not be incredibly fancy but it is neat and so easy to use. The Trend model features luxuries such as automatic lights and wipers, parking sensors and an electrically adjustable driver seat. It also has numerous controls on the steering-wheel and you can connect just about any device to the car via USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity.

As for the engine, well, the Fusion comes with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which is available exclusively in Trend spec. The engine punches above its weight as the 132kW and 240Nm motor feels sporty and supplies strong pull throughout the rev range. Capable of doing the 0-100km/h sprint in 9.2 seconds it’s no slouch and can reach a speed of 218km/h while consuming around 8.0 litres/100km in the combined cycle. It also features a smooth six-speed auto with Select Shift.

The ride quality is largely attributed to the new global CD-segment platform and the Fusion is the first model in Africa to utilise it. The new suspension design delivers a comfortable ride, while at the same time retaining lateral stiffness for an enhanced steering and handling feel.

Ford has delivered a premium car that looks the part and delivers with strong pricing.
