Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Motoring Review

SUMMER’S here and what better way to celebrate than with a brand new R7¼ million Lamborghini?

The only certainty we have of a Lamborghini is that it will have a V12  - the rest is a mystery; no one really knows what the maddest supercar maker of all time will do. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4V roadster is the most extraordinary car in the company’s illustrious 50-year history, or so said the firm's charismatic chairman, Stephan Winkelmann, at the car’s launch in Miami. He also announced that the priority list for previous Lamborghinis was that top speed would take top priority, followed by acceleration and then handling, with the Aventador this list was in reverse.

The Aventador Roadster has a mountain-moving 522kW provided by a huge 6.5-litre V12; more than anyone can handle. The Aventador Roadster will get you from 0-100 km/h in a pulverising three seconds flat and a top speed of 350km/h, moving through a seven-speed single-clutch gearbox, despite the folding roof the Roadster being only 50kg heavier than the hardtop. The roof itself comes in two forged carbon fibre panels that are removed by unlocking a couple of latches and lifting them out manually. Once in situ, they render the luggage capacity all but useless, but then, as Lamborghini insists that one doesn’t buy a car like this to go shopping with. This isn’t the first time that Lamborghini lopped the roof off one of their cars. The power is so immense that there was no other option than making it a four-wheel-drive - anything other and the driver will most certainly be killed.

Lamborghini even claims a relatively acceptable 16.1 litres/100km average for it, although emissions of 370g/km of CO2 won't win you any favours with Green Peace. On the inside, it isn’t as it was in previous Lamborghinis. Now that they’re owned by Audi, the Germans have added sensible engineering to the Aventador. The trade-off for an incredibly stiff carbon fibre body shell and racing-style suspension is a bone-shaking ride on ridged and rutted surfaces.

The rest isn’t a problem with a car like this. You don’t care about litres per 100km; you don’t care if it’s a bit uncomfortable and it doesn’t bother you that there’s a fair amount of wind noise or that the turning circle is rubbish. The fact that you’re sitting in a car that fast and that it looks that amazing, just steals the show. It’s every little boy’s dream car - a real shocker!
