Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

Motoring Review

Rolls-Royce's offering of a 2-door, 4-seater comes in the form of the Phantom Coupé.  For years Rolls-Royce have combined state-of-the-art technology with their timeless and finest contemporary design and the recently upgraded Phantom family is no exception to this tradition.  First launched in 2003, the Rolls Royce Phantom model line now includes the sedan (Phantom saloon), an additional extended wheel base version, the Coupé and the Drophead Coupé.  Each member of the Phantom family displays a unique personality of its own.  The Coupé is the most driver-orientated model in the Phantom line.  A number of subtle but significant modifications have been made that changes its character considerably.  It is noticeably more dynamic, almost sporty, while still offering incredible levels of comfort for which Rolls-Royce is world renowned.

From the front end, with its slim LED sidelights and larger, round driving lamps, the Coupé has a gently raked, softer-edge appearance, sweeping over a large bonnet.  The front coach-doors are rear-hinged enabling all passengers to enter and exit more gracefully.  For east of operation, the doors may be closed at the simple touch of a button, housed discreetly inside the front quarter-light.  In classic Rolls-Royce style, the Phantom Coupé has a dynamic, rising profile, its high waistline tapering back to a contemporary take on a boat-tail.  The picnic boot, as seen on the Drophead Coupé, is a wonderful social feature.  When lowered, it provides a seating platform for two, with hinges substantial enough to hold a weight of 150kg.  A new palette of nine standard paint colours has been selected for the Coupé, however, through the Bespoke programme, customers can choose from more that 44.000 different hues.  The Phantom Coupé is also available with a brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar surround.

An exquisite interior, hand-built using the finest materials and equipped with a studio-quality sound system, makes the Phantom Coupé the perfect car for all-day driving. The cabin uses traditional materials in a modern way: driver and passengers touch only leather, wood or chrome.  All the controls are intuitively and conveniently positioned, with the simplicity of the fascia understating the technology that lies beneath.  Closer fitting than those of the Phantom, the slim-line front seats offer outstanding comfort while at the rear the Coupé houses an inviting lounge seat - just perfect for two.  Boulevard lighting creates a gentle luminescence, an effect that can be heightened by the optional, full-length starlight headlining, which incorporates hundreds of tiny fibre optics to give the impression of a star-filled night sky.  As with every Rolls-Royce car, the interior of the Coupé can be personalised via the Bespoke programme, allowing for any number of features, each tailored to the tastes of the individual.

At the heart of the Coupé is the same 338kW, 720Nm of torque, direct-injection 6.7-litre V-12 engine as used by the Phantom.  A sport button on the steering wheel activates a new gearbox programme. Each gear is held for longer, increasing the rate of acceleration. Kick-down is also faster and accelerator pedal response has been enhanced.  The 8-speed automatic transmission makes the Coupé accelerate to speeds of a governed 250km/h, while achieving 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

Phantom Coupé features advanced safety specifications, worth a mention is its ISIS (Intelligent Safety and Information System).  This takes readings from sensors located throughout the car and, in the event of an impact, makes up to 4000 calculations a second to establish its severity, deploying safety systems as necessary. These include intelligent braking and restraint systems, such as Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control, seatbelt pre-tensioners and any of six airbags.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé comes in a very driver-orientated, almost sporty package which is new territory for this brand.  Buy a car like this and you buy a lifestyle befitting a high roller with lots of time to play.  Pricing is determined by the amount of customisations a client opts for, however, in this category of vehicle, cost is last on one's mind.
