Audi S8

Motoring Review

Audi has called the new head of their S8 family a 'sports car for everyday life'.  The Audi S8 is aimed at discerning buyers who seek strong performance and dynamics in a car as well as elegance and practicality for everyday use.  At just over R1,2 million, the Audi S8 is certainly not cheap but when compared to Mercedes-Benz or BMW offerings in this sector, the size-able and luxurious S8 stands alone in its class.

The body of the S8 is made entirely of sophisticated, aerodynamically treated aluminium.  Despite this fact however, the S8 is a heavy car and weighs in at around two tonnes.  It features double-glazed windows and rides on 20 inch alloy wheels featuring black brake calipers with S8 logos on the front.  Further S8 aluminium detail can be found on the single-frame radiator grille, the exhaust tailpipes as well as the exterior mirrors.  LED headlight technology comes as standard for both front and back lights.  One could summarize the S8 exterior as a powerful, yet elegant-looking vehicle with a road presence that leaves little doubt on its ability to circumnavigate an entire continent's highways effortlessly.

The interior of the S8 is sporty, yet elegant.  Exclusively designed power-adjustable deluxe sport seats made of the finest leather awaits.  Instrument dials are in grey with white needles and door sill trims and bezels come in aluminium trim.  The car is packed with technology.  There is a high resolution infotainment screen and a number of control clusters positioned at the upper end of the centre console.  Buy a car like this and you'll get the 'Audi connect' package as standard.  Enabled through the MMI Navigation Plus system with Bluetooth car phone online and an innovative MMI touchpad, this allows passengers to enjoy unrestricted online connectivity turning the S8 into a WLAN hotspot.

The S8 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4,0 litre V8 engine, capable of delivering 382 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque.  Power is pushed to the wheels through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.  The S8 uses Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system which, alongside the sport differential, actively distributes power between the rear wheels.  Adjustable air-suspension is fitted all-round and is tune-able through the Drive Select system that offers a number of settings.  The Audi S8 is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and additionally features a cylinder deactivation system, which kicks in when possible to save fuel.

Of all cars for sale in the Audi range, the S8 certainly displays formidable preventative safety specifications.  Stronger, lighter, stiffer and safer - the Audi Space Frame which makes up the body of the S8 exceeds all current industry standards by far.  Active head restraints, intelligent airbags all round and Quattro® together with ESP (electronic stabilization programme) - which networks ABS (anti-locking brake system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution), ASR (anti-slip regulation), EDL (electronic differential lock) and the conventional hydraulic brake assist system; the S8 takes its stand as one of the safest Audi cars on our roads today.

Performance in character yet elegant in style, Audi S models are now available for order in South Africa.
