BMW M6 Coupe

Motoring Review

For 2012, BMW have made a few significant changes to their BMW M6 Coupe.  The car has a 10% higher engine output and a 30% higher torque than previous M6 cars for sale.  Embodying both sports car and luxury Coupé, the M6 is aimed at the discerning buyer and makes for a handsome addition to any car collectors inventory.

From the outside the M6 Coupe exudes aerodynamic performance.  It has an extremely low slung front apron and wide air inlets which help optimize driving stability and ventilation of the high-performance engine.  Its BMW signature double kidney grille with M6 emblem alludes to advanced behind-the-scenes technological forces at work while front adaptive LED headlights come standard.  There is a powerful side character line which has its origins in the M air vents with integrated indicators.  Appropriately flared wheel arches provide housing for the standard 19 inch or optional 20 inch light alloy wheels.  The M6 Coupe has a contoured and elongated-looking roof made of light weight carbon fibre which gives the appearance of the car lying even lower and more firmly on the road.  Rounding off the picture is a muscular sporting rear with four exhaust pipes and a hexagonal diffuser.

Buy a car like this and you will get a 4-seater Coupe with a luxurious interior.  To enter, pass over the illuminated M6 entry sill and you will find made-to-measure, electrically adjustable M seats with distinctly moulded side supports.  The M emblem instrument panel has circular instruments with red needles and white illumination which display M-specific information relating to speed and revs.  The three-spoke multi-function steering wheel is sheathed in exclusive Merino leather including a M logo in stainless steel and offers excellent grip for sporty changes of direction.  There are ergonomic thumb rests and fingertip controls for gear changing and redesigned shift paddles.  Two M buttons activate different M Drive vehicle setups without having to take hands from the wheel.  Multi-function keys also provide an efficient means of controlling the telephone and audio system.  Carbon fibre interior trim strips are in abundance and the roof liner is an Anthracite colour.  Standard specifications offered for the M6 include 2-zone automatic climate control, front heated seats, M driver footrest, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and exterior mirrors, cruise control, alarm system and BMW's professional radio with HiFi loudspeakers.  A professional navigation system, active and ventilated M multifunction front seats, comfort access with additional soft close function for the doors, and a Bang & Olufsen surround sound audio system are all extras on the options list.

Designed for Formula One performance, the M6 Coupe is fitted with a high revving 4.4 litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.  It produces an impressive 412kW between 6000 - 7000 rpm and a maximum torque output of 680 Nm between 1500 - 5750 rpm.  This muscle machine catapults from 0-100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.  The M6 Coupe exhibits an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h.  CO2 emissions are rated at 232 g/km and fuel consumption is quoted at 9.9 litres/100 km.  The M6's V8 engine is mated with a seven-speed M Double Clutch transmission with Drivelogic.

As one would expect from a car of this caliber, a plethora of safety features are included:  anti-lock braking system (ABS), DSC stability control, cornering brake control (CBC), dynamic brake control (DBC), brake assistant and M dynamic mode. Other safety features include high beam assistant, BMW night vision with pedestrian recognition, lane change warning, lane departure warning, rear-view camera, surround view, speed limit info as well as front and side airbags. The front seats are equipped with belt force limiters and belt tensioners and ISOFIX child seat mountings can be found in the rear seat.

Recommended retail pricing starts at R1 391 500, but optional extra's will inflate the price upwards from there.  The BMW M6 Coupe is surely a pleasure to own and drive – some of us can always dream!  (Prices are subject to change according to various factors so please consult your dealer for the latest price.)
