MINI Cooper 5-door Hatch

Motoring Review

Mini adds a practical touch to Cooper

THE new Mini is a great product. Here at Autodealer, we were very impressed with both the Cooper and Cooper S models. Now, the British car maker has released a more practical five-door version of the new Mini.

The standard Mini design has been retained but a few alterations have been made to the new model’s body. The benefit of the added doors is additional practicality, better interior space and a wider audience to appeal to. At 72mm longer, the new car now gains 67 litres of boot space for a total of 278 litres, while the rear quarters benefit from a new centre seat. The car is also higher, while the new roofline alludes to the new model’s added doors.

The range is expected to comprise four models, locally. These should include six-speed manual Cooper and Cooper S models and six-speed automatic Cooper and Cooper S models. The engines remain the same with the Cooper S making use of a 2.0-litre unit good for 142kW/280Nm, while the Cooper features a 1.5-litre turbocharger three-cylinder, good for 100kW/220Nm.

The Cooper S models will feature the signature honeycomb pattern radiator grille, anthracite bumper trim, additional air intake in the bonnet, brake air ducts integrated into the lower air inlet and a separate rear apron with exhaust tailpipes arranged at the centre. These variants also bear a red 'S' logo with a chrome border. The Mini Cooper five-door hatch variants are fitted with a bumper trim in high-gloss black and exterior mirror caps in the body colour. Their radiator grille ribs and tailgate handle are white aluminium, while the exhaust tailpipe has a chrome cover. There are also LED headlamps with adaptive light distribution, LED indicators and LED fog lamps.

Thanks to the added length, there’s 15mm more headroom and 61mm extra interior width at elbow height.  The rest of the interior is typical Mini with the air vents, instruments and door trim in the classical design elements.

The now infamous centrepiece is used as a four-line TFT display or a colour screen of up to 8.8 inches. It provides operating feedback for vehicle functions, air conditioning, infotainment, communication, navigation maps and route directions, as well as the special graphics for Mini Connected Services. The selection and control of these functions is via a controller in the centre console, which comes in conjunction with the Radio Mini Visual Boost, the Mini navigation system or the Mini navigation system professional.

The five-door Mini comes with things such as ABS with EBD, Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and the brake assistant, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). Other safety features include front and side airbags, plus front and rear curtain airbags.
