Motoring Review

The Mercedes-Benz SUV assault is in full swing. Just last week we were in Namibia driving the GLE, GLC and updated G-Class models. Now, the German brand has released information about its flagship SUV, the GLS, which is a facelifted GL model and is due next year. Here are five reasons why this new model should be like an S-Class on stilts:

1.Its badge- As you may know, Mercedes has renamed its SUV range in order to have some indication of each model’s size and segment. The GLA for example, is a compact SUV version of the A-Class, the GLC a larger SUV version of a C-Class and the GLE an SUV version of the E-Class. That means, the GLS, like the S-Class, is at the very pinnacle of its range - the most advanced G-badged model.

2.It has some firepower - The GLS63 AMG model receives the full-fat 430kW/760Nm 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8, which means that the seven-seat SUV will have some serious performance credentials. The rest of the engine range consists of the 334kW V8 bi-turbo GLS550, the 269kW GLS450 and the 190kW GLS350d model.

3. It should be comfortable everywhere - The vehicle comes with air suspension and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It can be set up to be sporty, comfortable and ready for off-roading with six transmission modes, several driving modes and capability. The vehicle comes with all-wheel-drive, a low-range function for the gearbox, centre locking differential as well as an impressive 306mm of ground clearance with the air suspension system.

4.It comes with multiple goodies- Expect standard features to include the Mercedes eight-inch infotainment system with touch-pad control, leather seats, crosswind assist, collision prevention assist, attention assist, pre-safe braking system, braking assist and two-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, knee airbag for the driver and front passenger (combined thorax/pelvis airbags) and window airbags above all three seat rows.

5.It looks more sophisticated- The GLS gets a more modern Mercedes look with lashings of chrome, roof rails, a bigger grille and more sculpted headlamps. In side profile, the vehicle has new alloy wheel options while at the rear there are new LED tail lamps.
