The V40 has already taken the place of three models, the S40 sedan, V50 wagon and C30 hatch, while the Cross Country variant will take the place of the aging V70 Cross Country.
The announcement of the new model comes after Volvo South Africa announced last week that they would be launching R-Design variants of the V40. The new Cross Country takes the V40’s shape and has added characteristics to the design. The vehicle looks more muscular and rides some 40mm higher than the standard V40 and has features such as Hill Decent Control.
Other upgrades unique to the Cross Country are the 19-inch rims, dark contrasting front bumper with honeycomb mesh grille and upright DRL lights. The door sills, along with the rear bumper that features an integrated skid plate, are also contrasting colours to add to the vehicles all-road appeal.
The interior has also received a makeover with the option of five different upholstery versions, including the Espresso Brown accent colour. The stitching of the upholstery is also done in contrasting colours, with the option to make the contrast more profound by adding the Copper Dawn centre stack inlay.
An interior-lighting package allows for the driver to adjust between seven mood themes or simply allow the red-to-blue lighting adjust itself according to the interior temperature.
In terms of practicality, the Cross Country features a rear seat with 40/60 split with the option of a hanging load net in both soft and steel material grades in the load compartment. The car also has the option of an extra floor in the load compartment, allowing for a versatile load bay.
The range-topping Cross Country T5 turbo-petrol is equipped with all-wheel-drive to enhance off-road ability. The engine in the T5 is the familiar 2.5-litre, but with upgrades seeing the power jump to 187kW and 400Nm of torque, with 40Nm of overboost during acceleration. The T5 will dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 6.5 seconds while using a claimed 7.8 litres/100km.
The T4, equipped with a 1, 6-litre GTDi, makes 132kW and 270Nm, with 30Nm of overboost. Two turbodiesel options will also be available, the D4 producing 130kW and 400 Nm and the D3 110kW and 350Nm. The Powershift transmission is an option on all models.
