The Holden Commodore has topped Australia's car market for the past seven years and now it’s here - as the Chevrolet Lumina. Featuring a 3,8-litre V6 or 5,7-litre V8 engine, the Lumina is a big car with big performance. And in November, two pick-up versions of the 5,7-litre derivatives, which will be known as Utes (abbreviation for utility vehicles, we'd presume), will be launched.

The Chevrolet division of Delta hopes the Lumina, some examples of which were previously imported by General Motors Corporation African Operations, will build its reputation on luxury, refinement, comfort and effortless performance. Furthermore, Chevrolet wants the Lumina to be known as a true driver's car in South Africa and has devoted much development time to chassis dynamics, build quality and powertrain and safety performance.

The LS and S models are fitted with 3,8-litre Ecotec V6 engines that produce 152 kW at 5 200 r/min and 305 N.m of torque at 3 600 r/min. The 5,7-litre V8 engine of the SS-derivatives deliver 245 kW at 5 600 r/min, and 465 N.m at 4 000 r/min.

The Lumina is equipped with air conditioning, power steering, remote rear-view mirrors, an audio system with CD-player (with speed-dependent volume control and controls on the steering wheel), a remote keyless entry system, height-adjustable driver's seat, service indicator, cruise control, power windows, a height and reach-adjustable steering wheel and light-activated headlamps. As an additional luxury feature, the SS-models have fully leather trimmed sports seats.

In terms of its interior dimenstions, the Lumina has 1 071 mm front and 986 mm rear legroom. There is 992 mm headroom in the front (rear: 966 mm), while a luggage capacity is 465 dm³.

Chevrolet SA suggests that the Lumina's power-assisted steering package will generate a precise feel through positive feedback and on-centre definition. It has a turning circle of 11 metres, the company says.

The Lumina's suspension consists of MacPherson struts at the front and a control-link independent setup at the rear. All the models in the range are fitted with ABS brakes with electronic brake power distribution, a collapsible steering column, dual airbags, as well as side impact door beams.
