It has added more features to its Sport and Exclusive packages, officially introducing the Communications package -available since January 2004 - and improved the level of standard features across the range.

The standard equipment list now includes exterior body-coloured door handles and boot grab handles for the 318i and 320d models. On the interior, the plastic trim in the 318i, 320i and 320d have been replaced with aluminium.

Safety features include fog lights, which are now fitted as standard on the 318i and 320d, and tyre pressure monitoring to check tyre temperatures and pressures. Rain sensors and automatic light controls have been included to automatically activate the windscreen wipers and adapt the speed according to the intensity of the rain. Where limited light is available, the vehicle's lights will automatically be activated, though they can still be operated manually.

One particular safety feature now available across the BMW range is Brake Force Display with additional brake light surfaces being illuminated when excessive force is applied during emergency stops or when ABS is activated.

The BMW Communications Package can be added, which includes a Bluetooth compatible cell phone system that can be operated via the multifunction steering wheel. The package also includes Voice Control for complete hands-free driving and a hi-fi loud speaker system with surround sound speakers.

The Exclusive Package, with features depending on the model, is targeted at the more discerning motorist.

Montana leather trim forms part of the package when ordered on the 318i, 320i and 320d models. The 325i, 330i and 330d models, with standard leather trim, are also fitted with electric front seats with memory function and an electrically operated rear screen roller blind.

The package includes Park Distance Control at the rear to detect obstacles from a distance of 1,5 m and a height of 40 cm, and bi-xenon headlights that include electric headlight washer system and automatic headlight height adjustment.

The 318i and 320i receive front centre armrests while a six CD changer becomes available across the range.

The Sport Package, which can also be ordered for the 318i and 325i Touring models, comes with sport suspension settings and is lowered by 15 mm for greater traction.

With this package, regular 3 Series' are transformed into muscle machines with the addition of the M Aerodynamic kit with front and rear spoilers and side sills to improve performance and enhance road holding and stability.

In keeping with the sports theme, the interior trim and door sills are revised and clear indicator lenses added together with light alloy wheels with mixed low-profile radial tyres.

An M Sports multifunction leather steering wheel and sport seats for the front occupants are included. So too is Anthracite roof lining to reduce the effects of vibration and exterior noise and to regulate the cabin temperature.
