Volvo SA has been busy - earlier this year it announced changes to its T5 engine, and now it has introduced a 2,0-litre turbodiesel option for its S40 and V50.

The manufacturer’s well-liked compact S40 saloon and V50 station wagon ranges, were launched in 2,4-litre and T5 guises last year, so the diesel engine is the third power-unit in the line-up.

Where the petrol engines have a five-cylinder in-line configuration, the turbodiesel power-plant has four in-line cylinders mounted transversely to power the front wheels. S40s and V50s with the turbodiesel engine are only available with six-speed manual gearboxes.

This engine produces 100 kW of power at 4 000 r/min and a hefty 320 N.m of torque at only 2 000 r/min. It also comes with a handy over-boost function, which increases the torque at take-off to 340 N.m.

Fuel consumption in a mixed driving cycle is a claimed 5,7-litres per 100 km.

The 2,0D uses second-generation common rail technology and Volvo says that its particulate emissions filter betters the Euro4 regulations by a large margin. The engine meets the current European legal requirements - valid until 2006 – even without a filter.

Volvo’s new turbodiesel injection system operates under extreme pressure, and helps achieve the engine’s good performance and low emission levels. Equipped with piezo-electrical injectors for more effective combustion and reduced noise levels, the engine has been designed to cope with further adjustments to the emissions requirements.

Barring a passenger airbag cut-off switch and front foglights, the range of safety and comfort features is identical to those offered with the well-equipped 2,4-litre versions of the compact saloon and station wagon.

Routine services for the diesel-powered models are scheduled at 20 000 km intervals, but oil and oil filter changes are required after every 10 000 km. Both the S40 and V50 2,0Ds are covered by Volvo Car SA’s five-year/100 000 km service and maintenance plan.
