Former driver Jean Alesi says the new Formula One rules are just what the sport needs and predicts a great future for Giancarlo Fisichella.

“After a lack-lustre season last year, F1 has now become an amazing spectacle from the first lap to the last, and I cannot deny that I am delighted. I sat enthralled in front of my television, and did not miss a moment of what happened at Interlagos,” Alesi said on his website.

“I have become a fan of Fernando Alonso, and I am also delighted by the win for Giancarlo Fisichella. He deserves a fast car because, in my opinion, he is one of the most talented drivers of his generation,” he said.

Fisichella won his maiden grand prix last week after race officials changed their decision and awarded the Brazilian Grand Prix to him after a timekeeping error.

Alesi said he was pleased to see McLaren start the season so well. “The great results of McLaren-Mercedes are well deserved. Since the winter, I have been saying this team can do more and that they would perform well this season. I cannot wait to see the new MP4/18. It should enable the team to move to a new level. I could not resist sending a few SMS to Norbert Haug during the races to make him smile – I am like one of the family.”

Alesi, who is racing in the DTM series for Mercedes, says he will be commentating on the San Marino Grand Prix for Italian television. The DTM season starts on April 26 at Hockenheim.
