Following the launch this week of Lexus' IS300, some styling and technological changes have been added to give its flagship LS340 more oomph. Meant to slot in alongside the 7 Series, XJ, aging S-Class and soon-to-be-launched A8, the LS340 remains pitted against some stiff competition.

Technologically, one of the additions is "Lexus Park Assist", which aids parking by using six ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front bumper and four in the rear to warn drivers of obstacles.

Also new in the Lexus LS 430 is the implementation of the Lexus AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System). This allows the low-beam module within the headlight cluster to swivel in response to the steering for directional lighting.

The five-speed automatic transmission is replaced by a six-speed Super ECT automatic transmission. The transmission uses a triple planetary gear system, amongst other things, to significantly reduce the size and the number of components in the transmission. The result is that the new six-speed transmission is virtually the same size and weight as the five-speed unit that it replaces.

The new transmission also features a manual shift option. With the selector lever in the "S" position, gears are selected manually by a push of the lever, forward (+) to shift up a gear, and back (-) to shift down. The transmission has an AI (Artificial Intelligence) mode that invokes varying programmed shift patterns.

Added protection for front seat occupants comes in the form of "Knee" airbags for the driver and front passenger. Minor interior changes include a revised instrument cluster, swing type reading lamps, and a large illuminated vanity mirror.

Exterior changes include a new design for the 17-inch alloy wheels and a revision to the front and rear views with new front and rear light clusters and bumper treatments. At the front, the styling changes include revised fender, bonnet, and grille.

The Lexus LS 430 retails for R737 780.
