Hyundai's Getz was declared budget car champion by the British motoring programme Top Gear.

The list included the Daewoo Matiz (now sold in South Africa as the Chevrolet Spark - ), Daihatsu Charade, Kia Rio and the Smart, among others. Top Gear presenters, Adrian Simpson and Tiff Needell, pitted the cars against each other and awarded points for all aspects of running and ownership.

"It handles with some poise - it rides comfortably and that gear change is lovely," Simpson said of the Getz. "Look at that interior; things are a lot more plush. It feels as though Hyundai is coming of age now."

Needell, who drove the cars round a specially prepared test track said: "It rides the bumps very well, I'm impressed!

The pair also liked the Getz's looks and mentioned that though the car is small, there's lots of space, especially with the seats down.

In South Africa, the Hyundai Getz comes with a standard 3-year/100 000km factory warranty and a 3-year/45 000km service plan standard on the 1,6 derivatives.

Retail prices for the Getz in South Africa start at R93 995 for the 1,3. Standard features on all derivatives include central locking, power steering, electric windows and a transponder immobiliser.
