Volkswagen is recalling 870 000 vehicles worldwide due to front axle problems and VWSA says very few South Africans should be affected.

The vehicles affected by the recall include the Passat models built between 1996 and 1999, Audi A4 and A8s from 1994 to 1999 and Audi A6s built between 1997 and 1999.

The company said in a statement it was possible that the front bellows of the front axle could be damaged leading to premature wear and in isolated cases the failure of the bearing arm, mainly on high-mileage vehicles.

Product public relations manager for VWSA Songezo Zibi on Friday told CARtoday.com that very few cars were expected to be affected as the problem is something that should be highlighted in routine services.

He also said that in those time frames, the only model that may be of concern is the Audi A8 of which very few were imported into the country.
