The Opel Meriva is one of the seven finalists in the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists coveted Car of the Year.

Following a poll amongst guild members to establish a shortlist of finalists, the final selection will be made by the guild’s panel of jurors.

The seven nominees will be evaluated from the 23rd to 25th January when jurors will test the cars on a course designed to test the cars’ mettle.

The other nominees include the BMW 530d Steptronic, the Honda Accord 2.4 Type S and Jazz 1.4i and Mazda 6 2.0 Elegance. The Renault Megane 1.9dCi and Toyota RunX 1.6 RX complete the list.

Opel ushered in a new dimension in the compact MPV class in South Africa with the Opel Meriva when it was released in late September.

The fully-imported five-seater Meriva, which can be converted into a four, three, two or even single seater, has been a practical certainty for the South African market.

This new five-seat minivan – with its modern design and FlexSpace seating system – has set a new benchmark in interior versatility.
