Powered by the 48-valve, six-litre V12 engine of the Vanquish supercar, the 300 km/h-plus Aston Martin DB9 Volante will become arguably the world’s fastest ragtop when it débuts at next year’s Detroit Motor Show.
The Volante’s sibling, the DB9 Coupé, was unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and both models will be hand-built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon plant. It is expected that more than 2 000 DB9s will be sold next year (many of them on the American market), of which around 50 per cent will be the Volante.
“From the outset of the DB9 programme we knew we wanted a convertible model. The Volante is not a coupé with just the top taken off,” Aston Martin chief executive Dr Ulrich Bez said.
“The Volante is perfectly proportioned from every angle, while subtle embellishments help create a powerful-looking sports car,” he added.
Designed by Henrik Fisker, Aston Martin’s design director, the Volante has a fully-retractable hood that is operated by the push of a button and retracts within just 17 seconds. When down, it folds behind a hard tonneau cover, which then electrically closes flush with the DB9’s bodywork. The DB9 Volante has a boot capacity of 197-litres and has two rear seats.
In the event of an accident, sensors in the DB9 Volante detect the risk of a potential rollover and two roll-hoops are deployed from the rear seat headrests, while front seat passengers are protected by the windscreen A-pillars which can withstand twice the total weight of the car, an Aston Martin spokesman said.
Sources say that the Volante will be able to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in well under five seconds and achieve a top speed in excess of 300 km/h. Like the DB9 Coupé it will be offered with a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Is there any other cabriolet (as opposed to a roadster) that will leave the DB9 Volante in its wake? We don’t think so…
