Volkswagen's initial Touareg plan is under review due to a surprisingly high demand for the model, which has prompted production increases.

The manufacturer's Slovakian unit has been forced to increase the planned original 60 000 units for 2004 to 90 000 units to meet the healthy demand for the vehicles.

"It was decided to raise the number of Touaregs produced this year due to high interest," chairman Jozef Uhrik said.

He added: "We are now discussing how our suppliers are able to react so that we can deliver several thousands of Touaregs more to our customers."

The final decision on the Touareg's new production target would probably be taken in the next two weeks.

Earlier this year the company feared it would encounter problems meeting the Touareg target due to supply concerns. Uhrik has reported that supplies for the planned production increase have already been secured.
