Uitenhage-based VWSA has launched an advanced skills facility, the Volkswagen Driving Academy, at Kyalami. The focus of the programme is instruction on safety awareness, road courtesy, defensive driving as well as improving overall car control.

The facility is open to all members of the public who wish to improve their driving skills, but Volkswagen customers are especially encouraged to take part, says VWSA Marketing Communications manager Ryan Searle said recently.

"This academy forms part of our effort to assist Arrive Alive to reduce the number of fatalities on our roads by improving overall driving skill, awareness of other drivers and road users, courtesy and safety in criminally threatening situations," said Searle.

The academy has a fleet of new Golf GTIs as well as the Volkswagen Touareg, which was introduced early in 2004. The Touareg is used for off-road instruction, which concentrates on proper driving without damaging the car or environment.

"We are aware of the impact off-road vehicles can have on the environment when used irresponsibly, and our instructors put particular emphasis on responsible off-road driving," Searle added.

A Hijack Prevention Course, which comprises a two-hour theory course and practical session that requires the driver to apply what he or she has learned, will also be offered.

"The atmosphere of a hijacking is unpredictable, and keeping a cool head and sticking to the course's instructions could save a life," said academy manager Jacobs.

“We give driving instruction for everyday use, within the law and mainly to enhance owners' understanding of the dynamics of a motor vehicle, as well as how to effectively use its safety mechanisms especially in emergencies. That is part of the reason we have expanded defensive driving course," Jacobs added.

Drivers will have a choice of either the skidpan, hijack prevention, off-road, high performance and performance driving courses. These courses can be taken either severally or as a combination in order to widen the learning experience.

The Volkswagen Driving Academy can be contacted on 076 304 2611 or E-mail.
