, which will hit cinemas in May, is based on the comic about a group of genetically enhanced humans - or mutants. They are called the X-Men, and their superpowers help to protect the earth. The film’s cast includes Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Famkke Janssen, James Marsden, Ian McKellen and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.

According to reports director Bryan Singer was struggling to find a vehicle that looked suitably futuristic for one of the characters to drive - until Mazda stepped in. The result is this special, one-of-a-kind RX-8.

Inserts on the front spoiler and around the air intake create an “X” shape to fit in with the film's theme. Side skirts and silver flashes behind the front wheels add flair to the flanks, but it's that huge rear wing which really catches the eye, while suitably X-shaped alloys complete the look.

Cyclops, who will be portrayed by Marsden, also gets a special silver and black-trimmed communication console to keep in touch with fellow mutants.

The speedy four-dour rotary-engined RX-8 is rumoured to be on its way to the South African market in the near future. Mazda has no plans to market the X2 bodykit to buyers, however.
