The sales figures for January 2020 are in ... and 946 units separate the top two vehicles on our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies.
According to Naamsa, January’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 39 475 units, representing an 8,1 percent fall compared with the corresponding month in 2019 (check out our list of best-selling passenger vehicles, too). The light commercial segment, meanwhile, showed a 16,3 percent drop to 9 791 units compared with January 2019.
So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the first month of 2020?
Well, the locally built Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, ahead of the (likewise SA-made) Ford Ranger, which again had to settle for second place.
The Nissan NP200 climbed two places to third, forcing the Isuzu D-Max (its final figure comprised 672 units of the D-Max and a single unit of the KB) down one to fourth. The Nissan NP300/Hardbody, meanwhile, fell a spot to fifth.
The Mahindra Pik Up range (which now includes an automatic version), meanwhile, moved up two places to sixth, with Toyota’s Land Cruiser Pick-up dropping down one to seventh. The GWM Steed was up two spots to eighth, while the Volkswagen Amarok fell two to ninth, leaving the Nissan Navara to close out the table.
That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (52), Mitsubishi Triton (40), Fiat Fullback (20) or Mazda BT-50 (15) on the list in January 2020. As a reminder, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month (despite Mercedes confirming production will end later in 2020, we suspect the local arm is still carrying stock).
