The sales figures for June 2019 are in ... and a massive 2 741 units separate the top two vehicles as the (increasingly one-sided) battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.
According to Naamsa, June’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 939 units, representing a fall of 1,6 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (14 495 units), meanwhile, showed a gain of 1,2 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018 (be sure to check out the best-selling and worst-selling passenger vehicles, too).
So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the sixth month of 2019?
Well, the Toyota Hilux – now bolstered by the arrival of the GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives – remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger again having to make do with second place (after the first half of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 8 133 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).
Meanwhile, the Nissan NP200 remained in third, with the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – sticking in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 525 units of the D-Max and 86 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody held steady in fifth.
The Mahindra Pik-Up remained in sixth, with the Volkswagen Amarok moving up three places to seventh. The GWM Steed thus fell one to eighth, while the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up retained ninth place. The Nissan Navara grabbed the final place on the list, dropping two spots.
That means there was no room for the facelifted Mahindra Bolero (50), Mitsubishi Triton (49), Mazda BT-50 (25) or Fiat Fullback (4) in June 2019. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
