The people spoke and Porsche listened. Yes, the German firm has whipped the covers off the new 718 Cayman GTS 4,0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4,0, each featuring flat-six (rather than flat-four) power.
The fresh two-seater variants have upsized to a version of the naturally aspirated 4,0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine (which here “effortlessly revs to 7 800 r/min”) used in the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4.
Churning out 294 kW in GTS guise (down slightly from the 309 kW generated in the Spyder and GT4), the newcomers will sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,5 seconds and top out at 293 km/h when fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox and twin-tailpipe sports exhaust system. The company's familiar Sport Chrono package ships as standard.
Porsche’s active suspension management sports suspension (with a 20 mm lower ride height) and a mechanical limited-slip rear differential combine to result in what the firm describes as “a remarkable balancing act between dynamic handling and everyday comfort”.
The mid-engined sportscars are fitted with 20-inch light-alloy wheels in satin-gloss black as standard. High-performance tyres (in 235/35 ZR20 size fore and 265/35 ZR20 size aft) frame upgraded brakes that feature cross-drilled discs and red callipers. Ceramic composite brakes are, of course, available as an option.
From the outside, you'll be able to recognise the upgraded GTS thanks to the application of dark trim, such as the spoiler lip, air intake, front foglamp lenses, rear lenses and redesigned lower rear bumper.
Inside, you’ll find Alcantara applied to the centre panels of the standard sport seats plus, as well as to the steering wheel rim, centre console, gear lever and armrests (in the Cayman, the material also covers the A-pillars and roof lining).
An optional GTS interior package adds another colour (either carmine red or crayon), which is applied to the rev counter, seat belts and various decorative seams. A Bose surround sound system and Burmester high-end surround sound system are further options.
