Mitsubishi Motors has announced the Pajero nameplate will be discontinued in Japan by August 2019, launching a “Final Edition” model to see off the 37-year-old badge.
Limited to 700 units, the special-edition model (seemingly offered exclusively in five-door guise) gains a smattering of bespoke features and serves to celebrate the Dakar-winning off-roader that first launched way back in 1982 (some 640 000 units have since been sold in the firm’s domestic market).
While the arrival of this model marks the end of sales of the nameplate in Japan, Mitsubishi says the fourth-generation Pajero (along with the Pajero Sport) will “continue to be sold” in some overseas markets. A report from late in 2018, however, suggested the future of the model was up in the air with no direct replacement in sight.
So, what sets the Pajero Final Edition apart? Well, offered in a choice of four colours, it is equipped as standard with roof rails and a full sunroof. Inside, you’ll find swathes of new leather upholstery (offered in the choice of two colours) and power adjustment for the front seats. A rear differential lock ships standard, as do side and curtain airbags.
Illuminated scuff plates bearing the “Final Edition” logo as well as the serial number are also included. The Japanese firm furthermore offers a special "Final Edition Accessory Package", which contains popular dealer options, such as a rear spoiler, a spare tyre cover and mud flaps.
Under the bonnet, the Pajero Final Edition features Mitsubishi’s familiar 3,2-litre turbodiesel engine (offering 140 kW and 441 N.m in our market), mated to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.
In South Africa, the Pajero range currently comprises a three-door GLS derivative and a five-door GLS Exceed variant, priced at R699 995 and R799 995 respectively.
