When the new Kia Sorento was unwrapped earlier in February 2020, the firm opted not to release engine details. But now that’s changed.
Yes, the Korean automaker has announced engine options for its sharply styled fourth-generation Sorento, which rides on an all-new platform, boasting a wheelbase up 35 mm to 2 815 mm.
While local engine options have yet to be confirmed, Kia has announced the Sorento will be offered in some markets with an electrified powertrain. The latter hybrid system comprises the firm’s turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine, a 44,2 kW electric motor and 1,49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack.
The result, says Kia, is a combined total output of 169 kW and 350 N.m, providing what the firm describes as “low emissions with high levels of performance”. Interestingly, the battery pack is sited beneath the passenger cell so has had no impact on cabin or luggage space.
There’s also a new 2,2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which generates 149 kW and 440 N.m. The oil-burning mill is mated to a new eight-speed (wet) dual-clutch transmission. In addition, some markets will receive a turbocharged 2,5-litre petrol unit developing 207 kW and 421 N.m. As with the diesel mill, this forced induction engine is linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Last we heard from Kia Motors South Africa, the new Sorento was expected to debut locally in the final quarter of 2020, although (again) local engine options have yet to be confirmed...
