The new Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupé has been revealed, powered by the firm's 450 kW electrified V8 and taking aim at BMW's 460 kW X6 M Competition.
Here, Affalterbach’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine, which has again been electrified here with an “EQ Boost” starter-alternator and a 48 V electrical system, offers the same 450 kW and 850 N.m as it does in the SUV body style version (some markets will receive a non-S variant with 420 kW and 750 N.m), delivered to all four wheels.
The starter motor and alternator have been combined into a single electric motor squeezed between the engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission, “temporarily” offering an additional 16 kW and 250 N.m. The result is a blast from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,8 seconds (or two tenths slower for the standard version) and an electronically limited top speed of 280 km/h.
The V8 features cylinder deactivation and active engine mounts (the latter exclusive to the S model), while an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle is standard.
Braking is taken care of by six-piston fixed callipers (with 400 x 38 mm discs) up front and single-piston floating items (with 370 x 32 mm discs) at the rear. The S variant features red-painted callipers, while a ceramic brake system with bronze-coloured callipers is optional for those wanting to reduce both unsprung mass and brake fade.
Other standard features of the coupé-style SUV include AMG-tuned air suspension and adaptive damping, 22-inch alloys (for the GLE63 S Coupé, that is) and an AMG exhaust system with two rectangular high-gloss chrome-plated tailpipe trim elements.
Inside, you’ll find AMG seats upholstered in Nappa leather, grey seat belts, a three-spoke AMG performance steering wheel (with aluminium shift paddles) and an AMG-specific control unit with additional switches in the centre console.
