Renault has whipped the covers off its new Mégane eVision, a concept car that previews a production model due to hit the market in 2021.
Based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s new modular CMF-EV platform, the Mégane eVision boasts what the French firm describes as “one of the thinnest batteries on the market and a new ultra-compact powertrain providing a more spacious interior layout”.
Billed as the “reinvention of the compact hatchback”, the concept measures 4 210 mm long, 1 800 mm wide and 1 505 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 700 mm. It rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/40 ZR20 rubber and tips the scales at 1 650 kg.
An electric motor delivers 160 kW and 300 N.m to the front axle, facilitating a claimed sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in “under eight seconds”. The 60 kWh battery is capable of DC charging (up to 130 kW), delivering what Renault merely calls an “impressive range”.
“Thanks to our brand-new Alliance platform CMF-EV, we broke the rules of size, use, design and energy efficiency to imagine the Mégane eVision show-car. We fully leveraged the potential of pure electric platform to re-invent the classical hatchback in an emotional way,” said Luca De Meo, CEO at Groupe Renault.
“With the thinnest battery on the market, a 4,21-metre compact body offering the roominess of a C-segment vehicle, the Mégane eVision is a masterpiece of packaging. We took our 25-year best-seller and took it to the future. Mégane eVision reinvents Mégane, and Renault reinvents Renault. This is just the beginning; a whole new generation of innovation-packed electric vehicles is to come,” he added.
The company has yet to reveal images of the interior.
