In August 2019, we brought you initial details (including pricing) of the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Namib special edition. And now the local arm of the Japanese firm has revealed more about this fresh flagship version of its rugged double-cab bakkie.
Billed as a “bespoke” model, Toyota SA describes the Namib as a “ready-to-go vehicle prepared and equipped to tackle the most daunting challenges”.
Priced at R893 600, the special model is some R125 000 more expensive than the derivative on which it’s based (and is available exclusively in Ivory White and Sand Beige hues). Power comes from the firm's familiar 4,5-litre turbodiesel V8, which sends 151 kW and 430 N.m to all four corners via a five-speed manual gearbox (with a low-range transfer case).
So, what do you score for the extra outlay? Well, the Land Cruiser Namib’s front grille has been swapped out for a mesh design featuring prominent “Toyota” lettering. Namib badges can be found on the flanks (alongside the Land Cruiser insignias), as well as the tailgate.
In addition, the new flagship of the range gains a steel front bumper with an integrated heavy-duty nudge bar, headlamps protectors and LED spotlights. There’s also a tubular rear step with integrated towbar, along with a protective loadbin skin.
The Land Cruiser Namib has been fitted with an upgraded off-road suspension (manufactured by a company Toyota SA describes only as “a respected local off-road suspension expert”), but retains the standard model’s payload and towing capacity. The tyres have been upgraded to 265/75/R16 Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx items, complete with white lettering and wrapped round 16-inch alloys.
Inside, the glovebox gains an added cooling duct, while special grey canvas seat covers (embroidered with the Namib logo) have been adopted, too. Toyota has also included a roof console with rear-facing LEDs, a lined storage binnacle, driver and passenger LEDs, a two-way radio compartment and a microphone cord hook.
