Volkswagen has released the first teaser image depicting its facelifted Tiguan, while also revealing initial details about the updated crossover.
The Wolfsburg-based firm first showed the teaser sketch during a Skype presentation attended by CARmag.co.za and various other publications, discussing the global success of the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace (the nameplate was VW's most-built globally in 2019, beating the Polo and Golf).
Dr. Hendrik Muth, head of product marketing for the brand, said the refreshed Tiguan would receive a “totally new front” allowing for a “more dynamic and masculine” overall design.
Judging by the teaser sketch, the Tiguan’s facia will be brought neatly in line with those of its younger crossover siblings, such as the T-Cross and T-Roc. Muth added a “very expressive” R-Line version would again be available.
The rear end of the vehicle will also be revised, while LED elements will be employed fore and aft. A new infotainment system – similar to that introduced with the latest Passat and employed by the Golf 8 – will furthermore be added, while some markets will receive updates to powertrains along with new driver assistance systems.
Muth went on to confirm a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) version of the facelifted Tiguan would join the line-up in Europe, offering an all-electric range of “more than 50 km”.
Expect a full reveal of the refreshed Tiguan in the third quarter of 2020, with an introduction to South Africa scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. The seven-seater Tiguan Allspace, meanwhile, should follow fairly soon thereafter, although VW SA says timing for the latter has yet to be confirmed.
